Sligo’s Virtual St Patrick’s Day Parade
This year’s Paddy’s Day parade is going online! And it looks set to be a cracker. Sligo St Patrick Festival has been planned with the lockdown in mind and with the intention of celebrating our wonderful town and country, in spite of the restrictions. Sligo St Patrick’s Day was established in 1971 and has been celebrated in the town every since year since. This will be it’s 50th anniversary!
Celebrating Previous St Paddy’s Day in Sligo
This year the organisers have been compiling videos from people all over the world and will be broadcasting these throughout the festival. On the day itself there will be a virtual parade with music, poetry and dancing and an MC Robbie Fitzpatrick. This video of past Sligo St Patricks day festivals is really fun to watch! It’s full of local people singing and dancing as they celebrate the holiday.
As part of the festival Sligo was illuminated in green under the ‘Greening of Sligo project, a partnership with Sligo County Council, Sligo BID and Failte Ireland. Numerous buildings took part and the town looked beautiful making this an unforgettable experience for Sligo to remember.
So, although the actual festival won’t be taken to the streets this year, Sligo Town still intend to celebrate this day of Irish identity and heritage. Make your own parade, play music and laugh. All in all, we hope you all have fun and enjoy St Patrick’s Day 2021.
