January 30, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
The Word Kicks Off the New Year with Blues Portraits and Song!
Music, songwriting, blues photography, and stories come to The Word this month with photographer, author and musician James Fraher and Singer/Songwriter Maria Carbonell.
Sligo Central Library and the BA Writing & Literature at IT Sligo proudly welcome James Fraher. In a career spanning over 30 years, Fraher’s honest and poignant images of blues musicians have been published in Downbeat, Guitar Player, Irish Arts Review, Juke Blues among others and on more than 150 record covers.
His work can be seen in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution and his photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe.
Joining Fraher is Sligo singer/songwriter Maria Carbonell. In 2015, Carbonell won the Sligo Young Songwriters Award and, since then, has performed over 30 gigs both in Ireland and abroad.
Her song ‘Imaginary Rain’ was released in September 2018, raising over 1,000 for charity. She is currently enrolled in the BIMM BA in Songwriting. Carbonell will perform original work and talk about her creative process.
The artist/writers will both present and perform, followed by a Q & A and an open-mic session open to writers and musicians and operating on a first come, first served basis. The Word is a collaboration between Sligo Central Library and the BA in Writing & Literature at IT Sligo. There is no charge for this event.
Event organisers who are members of Sligo Hub can share their event information on our calendar, subject to the approval of the Sligo Hub team.
