Language and Community-A Yeats Society Sligo-Peace Iv Event

September 10, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The third and final salon in our series specifically looks at the ways in which language helps create an identity and how it explains ourselves to one another.
Our guest speaker for this event is Linda Ervine who has the unlikely responsibility of being the first Irish Language Officer based in a loyalist area. In addition the Sligo Traditional Singers Circle which was set up to encourage foster and perpetuate the singing tradition in the Sligo, will be singing songs in the Sean Nos tradition. This will be followed by singers from Nigeria who will sing in their native dialects and will explain how the words express their sense of community.
Continuing this theme of using language to communicate, Barbara Dziedzic will read from her book of translations of the poems of W.B. Yeats into Polish.
