Coffee Mornings and Car Breakdowns

Petit Fours Today started off well with a lovely coffee morning at Eala Bhan Restaurant in aid of Rory Gallagher’s Wish to Walk. There was fantastic coffee as well as scones with jam and cream and petit fours. I think it should always be acceptable to have cake for breakfast. This afternoon I was meant to visit a farm and was really looking forward it but as I was driving out of the car park Gilbert (the car) started making an awful noise and was very difficult to steer. When I stopped I could see power steering fluid leaking so I took the car to my local garage. Gilbert has leaking pipes but as it’s a bank holiday Martin, the mechanic, couldn’t get any today. So I was stuck in Sligo town (which is about a 20 minute drive from Coolaney). No problem, I thought, I’ll get the evening bus that comes from Sligo to Coolaney – we now have two buses a day! Only the bus drivers decided to go on strike…but nobody knew. We were all waiting at the bus stop for buses that weren’t coming. After 20 minutes waiting I thought I’d better go and get the train – the last one leaves Sligo town at 6pm. Luckily I got to the station in time. I was going to phone a taxi from Collooney (where the station is) but the battery had died on my phone and of course these days there are no public phones. So I started walking to Coolaney and stuck my thumb out in the hope someone would give me a lift – they didn’t. Thankfully a friend came and gave me a lift. It’s at times like this I really don’t like living in rural Ireland. It’s only when you don’t have a car you realise how much you need one.
