Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery
Did you know that Sligo is the home to the oldest Megalithic cemetery in Ireland? It’s older than Newgrange and even older than the pyramids in Egypt. Take a drive a few miles out of Sligo town and step back hundreds of years at Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery.
Carrowmore is one of the OPW sites located in Sligo, the other is Sligo Abbey. They are open to the public from April to October with free admission on the first Wednesday of every month.
If you don’t make it on the first Wednesday it’s just a fiver to get in and you can either go around on your own with a guide sheet or go along with a guide at no extra cost. I’d really recommend the guide, you’ll find out the folklore, the way the tombs align with each other and so much more.
From Carrowmore there is a fantastic view right of Knocknarea, Benbulben and there are beautiful wild fields to explore and relax in. When I was there the other week there was even an impromptu traditional music session. I’m delighted to see there is now the Get Grounded coffee cart outside the visitor centre, this is a much needed service as for years there weren’t any facilities for a coffee.
Have you been to visit? Let us know what you thought.
What is access like in the winter months?
The centre is closed in the winter but there may be a way to get in. It would be best to contact the OPW to check https://www.opw.ie/en/#
