Autumn Highlights in Sligo

The kids are back to school and the days are getting shorter but there are still so many fantastic things happening in Sligo. If you aren’t from the county it’s a great time to plan a break, we’ll tell you some of the reasons why.

Take a long, rambling, walk through some of the stunning Sligo scenery. The forest walks are beautiful at this time of year with the leaves changing colour. The Sligo Walks website is the best place to plan your walking holiday.

Friends of Sligo Gaol have a weekend of events to commemorate 200 Years of Sligo Gaol. This takes place on September 8th and 9th and includes tours of the gaol, talks and more.

Sing your heart out with Michele Feeney in the singing workshops taking place at the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo. This course runs from September 12th to October 24th and places are limited.

There’s a Pregnancy and Family Wellness Day on September 16th in the Sligo Park Hotel. With 7 keynote speakers this free event is not to be missed.

Culture Night is on September 21st. It’s a night not to be missed when venues open their doors and invite you to create, explore and enjoy different events and activities and it’s all free.

Get up and Go events presents Inspiring Contribution. This event takes place on 21st and 22nd of September and has inspiring speakers from all over the world attending.  This international conference will inspire and motivate you and is suitable for anyone over the age of 15. North Sligo remembers the Spanish Armada from the 21st – 23rd of September. There is a weekend of drama, music, lectures, tours and guided walks planned.

Sligo Dark Tales Walking Tour is on September 22nd and October 27th. Explore Sligo’s dark history on a walking tour revealing Sligo’s turbulent past with stories of the undead, executions, jail-breaks, disease & macabre tales. This usually books out so be sure to book your place now.

Sligo Trail Running Festival takes place on the 28th – 30th of September so get the running shoes on.

For the music lovers the Sligo Festival of Baroque Music is on at The Model from 28th – 30th of September. More details here.

The Gatsby Ball is coming to the Clayton Hotel, Sligo on September 28th. This will be a fabulous event with drinks and canapé reception, 3 course meal, theatrical performance and then dance the night away with a band and DJ. For dress think Gatsby/Vintage/Posh. Tickets are great value at €50 and available from the Clayton Hotel 071 911 9000. All proceeds are in aid of the Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan Rape Crisis Centre.

The Strandhill Food Festival is on the 6th and 7th of October at Sligo Airport. There are demos and talks by celebrity chefs and of course lots of food.

Sligo Live Festival takes place from October 24th – 29th. Acts are being announced all the time, the headliners are The Boomtown Rats, The Bootleg Beatles, Dara O’Briain and Lisa Hannigan.

The Hazelwood Haunting returns on October 27th and 28th. Not for the fainthearted.

Easkey Scarecrow Festival takes place over the Halloween break. This is always an excellent event as you walk through the village and see the brilliant scarecrows.
